Privacy Policy
Geosmin Weather has no advertising and no analytics trackers, and we do not sell or share personal data. Checking the weather, subscribing, and receiving notifications need no account. An account is optional and exists only to carry a subscription to another phone or platform. One optional feature, rain nowcast alerts, sends your location to our servers while it is switched on. This page lists exactly what leaves your device and why.

Data stored on your device
Your saved locations, plans and rules, units and theme preferences, and cached weather data are stored on your device. Uninstalling the app deletes them. Apart from the subscription, optional account, and notification data described below, we keep no copy.
Install identifier
On first launch the app generates a random identifier for that installation. It is not derived from your device, your phone number, or any advertising identifier, and it is the only identity the app presents to our servers unless you add an email. Reinstalling the app creates a new one.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions are purchased through Google Play or the Apple App Store, which handle payment. We never see your card or bank details. The store sends us a purchase record (a purchase token and its status) which we store together with your install identifier so the subscription can be unlocked. No account is needed to subscribe. Manage or cancel a subscription through the store's subscription settings.
Accounts (optional)
You never need an account to use the app, to subscribe, or to receive notifications. After subscribing you may optionally add an email address so that your subscription can follow you to a new phone or to the other platform. Sign-in is by a one-time link sent to that email; we store no password. An account holds only your email address, the link to your purchase, and the list of installations using it. It does not hold your saved locations, plans, or weather history. An account may be used on up to five active devices at once. You can delete your account at any time from Settings in the app; deletion removes the email and every server-side record associated with it, and your subscription continues on the device that purchased it.
Location
If you grant location permission, the app uses your position to find the forecast and centre the map for where you are. Location access is optional: you can add places by name or postal code instead. Postal code lookup uses a database bundled inside the app, so it happens offline.
To fetch a forecast, the coordinates of a location you are viewing are sent to the weather provider for that point (see Third-party services). To show the map and radar, the app requests map and radar tiles from Geosmin's servers; those requests indicate the general area you are viewing at the map's zoom level, not your precise position.
Notifications
Notifications are optional and off by default, and need no account. Push delivery uses Firebase Cloud Messaging, a Google service; Google processes the push token under its own privacy policy. Each registration is tied to your install identifier; turning a notification off, or uninstalling, removes it from our servers.
Weather alerts for saved locations. If you turn these on, the app registers a push token with our notification server along with the public National Weather Service forecast zone codes for the locations you follow. No precise coordinates are sent for this purpose.
Rain nowcast alerts for your current location. This is the one feature that sends your position to us. If you enable it for your GPS location, the app periodically sends your current coordinates to Geosmin's servers while the feature is on, so we can watch the radar around you and notify you when rain is about to reach you. The app tells you this when you switch it on. Your location is used only to evaluate your alert and is not used to build a history of where you have been; each report is discarded once it is no longer needed to evaluate the alert. Switching the feature off stops the reporting immediately.
Calendar
If you enable calendar plans and grant calendar permission, the app creates and updates its own events in the calendar you choose. It reads only the events it created. Calendar data never leaves your device.
Server logs
When the app talks to Geosmin's servers (for map tiles, radar, and notifications), our servers and our content delivery provider record standard connection information: IP address, request path, timestamp, and app user agent. We use these logs solely to keep the service running, to protect it against abuse, and to diagnose faults. They are not linked to any identity and are kept only as long as needed for those purposes.
Third-party services
The app connects to the following services. Each processes requests under its own policies.
- NOAA / National Weather Service (api.weather.gov and related NOAA endpoints) for forecasts, alerts, and radar source data. NWS requests carry a contact email in the user agent, as NWS requires.
- Geosmin servers (wx.geosmin.day and related hostnames, delivered through Cloudflare) for map tiles, radar imagery, and notification registration.
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging for push notification delivery, only if you enable notifications.
- OSRM routing at routing.openstreetmap.de for route weather features, if you use them; the route's start, end, and waypoints are sent to compute the route.
The app contains no advertising SDKs and no third-party analytics SDKs. The store you install from (Google Play or the Apple App Store) may collect crash and diagnostic information under its own policies and your device settings.
Children
Geosmin Weather is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your choices
You can revoke location, notification, and calendar permissions at any time in your device settings, and turn rain nowcast alerts off inside the app. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data and its notification registrations. If you added an email, deleting the account from Settings removes all data we hold for it. To ask about, correct, or export data held on our servers, email [email protected]; if you have an account, write from its email address.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated effective date.
